Summer Institute in Plant Breeding 2

The plant breeding summer course is back for the second season. This year the course will be held in Ghent, Belgium. The course will be delivered by renowned scientists from the University of Minnesota and Ghent university. There will be two-course modules from which the participants can choose.

Crash Course in Molecular Biology (CCMB)

Modern breeding techniques for maize improvement

The Modern breeding techniques of maize focused on the latest scientific developments and tools to accelerate maize breeding (both conventional breeding and biotechnological techniques), the latest essential insights in the regulatory framework and environmental risk assessment principles in Africa and Europe and methods to collect reliable data that allow a thorough environmental risk assessment of new maize varieties.

Gene editing in the EU: Action for science and policy

The course "Gene Editing in the EU: Action for science and policy" is the fruit of a partnership between the Alliance for Science from Cornell University (USA) and the Plant Biotechnology and Breeding (Plant B+B) International thematic Network funded by the University of Ghent. Druing this course, participants will learn the role, purpose, and components of a strategic advocacy plan to impact the
policy environment for gene editing in the EU. The course will help participants understand how to use
their scientific knowledge to become more proactive communicators, engage stakeholders, develop,
and deploy science-based messages on gene editing.

Short Research Stage for Plant Biotechnologist and Breeders

The Scholarships of the short research stay and Summer Institute in plant breeding and biotechnology are the fruit of a partnership between the Plant Breeding Centre from the University of Minnesota (USA) and the Plant Biotechnology and Breeding (Plant B+B) International thematic Network funded by the University of Ghent. The scholarships aim at enhancing the capacity of researchers in the fields of plant breeding. This collaboration further seeks to connect scientists globally to promote scientific exchange and trans-continental research projects.

Plant Breeding 2 fight hunger

Plant breeding is the art and science of crop improvement. To feed an additional 3 billion people by 2050, food production needs to double while using less land, water, and other resources. The way forward is improving crops to be resilient to climate change with resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses. To achieve this goal, a well-trained workforce equipped with a sound knowledge of the plant
breeding process and technologies that improve its efficiency is needed.

Basic statistics in R online

This training gave an introduction to the use of the free statistical software language R.

The training covered data handling, graphics, and basic statistical techniques (t-tests, one-way ANOVA and non-parametric equivalents).

Introduction to the analysis of Next-Generation Sequencing data, online

This training was an introduction to 'Bulk RNA-Seq analysis for differential expression', Hands-on introduction to NGS variant analysis', and a 'Hands-on introduction to ChIP-Seq analysis'.

Cancellation Policy

The organizers expect the participant to be present if she/he has registered for a course and if this course takes place online. If you cannot attend, you must inform IPBO@vib-ugent.be at least one week before the course.

If trainees do not participate in the training activities without timely notification or valid justification (medical attestation in case of illness, a clarification by your group leader in any other case), participants will not be admitted to any future training course for six months following the ‘no-show’.

We expect participants to attend all the sessions for courses consisting of several days. Attendance certificates will only be awarded to those participants attending all the course’s training days or 80% of the lectures when a written justification for absence will be provided. Whenever the course director requests, the awarding of training certificates will also be bound to the submission of class assignments.

Please, help us! When registered participants do not show up and do not inform us, their training slot gets lost, meaning nobody else will benefit from this opportunity.
