Speaking science:4th Edition
Course Overview
Since its inception, the Speaking Science training program has empowered more than 40 scientists to engage with broader audiences effectively. By focusing on the art of communication, especially through social media, the program has helped these scientists enhance their outreach and connect more effectively with their target audiences.

- Develop a Communication Goal: Craft messages with a clear purpose and intention.
- Understand Audience Segmentation: Identify and understand different audience groups and the best ways to engage with them.
- Create an Engaging Triangle: Structure their content to stay focused and compelling.
- Leverage Social and Traditional Media: Utilize various media platforms to disseminate their message effectively.

- Influence Policy through Science Diplomacy: Learn strategies to communicate with policymakers and advocate for science-driven decisions.
Personalized Coaching
In addition to the group sessions, you will benefit from two one-on-one coaching sessions with experienced journalists and social media experts. These personalized sessions, scheduled outside class hours, will provide tailored advice and insights to refine your communication strategies.
Who Should Attend
This year, we target network participants from the International Molecular Laboratory Training Programme (MOBILAB) partner universities, PLANT B+B Network, and the Open Doors Fellowship program (ODFP)
Due to high demand and our commitment to providing individualized attention, we have limited available slots.
Important Details
- Course Duration: Five weeks, from September 19, 2024, to October 17, 2024.
- Timing: 3 hours every Thursday at 2 - 5 PM East African Time or 1- 4 PM Central European Time
- Format: Online sessions via ZOOM, supplemented with personal coaching.
At the end of the course, participants will learn to craft compelling messages that resonate on platforms like X (formally Twitter), LinkedIn, Instagram and print media. Our training will guide you through the nuances of each platform to maximize your impact.
Cancellation policy
The organizers expect the participant to be present if she/he has registered for a course also if this course takes place online. If you cannot attend, you must inform IPBO@vib-ugent.be at least one week before the course.
If participants do not show up without timely notification or valid justification (medical attestation in case of illness, a clarification by your group leader in any other case), you will not be admitted to any future training course through Plant B+B for six months following the no-show.
