Sebastien Carpentier

Sebastien Carpentier is a bioscience engineer specialized in cell and gene biotechnology and agriculture. His team focuses on phenotyping the biodiversity of crops by integrating abiotic stress physiology with omics technology. Before joining the Consultative Group of International Agricultural Research as team leader for the banana characterization and evaluation, he was a professor in crop stress physiology for 6 years at KULeuven.

By characterizing and evaluating the banana accessions preserved in the banana gene bank (Bioversity International Musa Germplasm Transit Centre (ITC)) and by assessing their suitability for certain crucial agro-eco zones around the world; his research is crucial for the long-term conservation and the distribution of the crop’s gene pool and for the prebreeding programs.
