Dr. Yemisrach Melkie Abebaw
Dr. Yemisrach Melkie Abebaw has a solid technical background, a strong interest in plant biotechnology, and a passion for developing African biotechnology research. After completing her Bachelor's in Horticulture at Jimma University (Ethiopia), she did her Master's in Plant Biotechnology at Wageningen University (The Netherlands), specializing in Plants for Human and Animal Health. Dr. Abebaw completed her education with a Ph.D. in Biology from Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (Germany).
Yemisrach is a Plant Biotechnology Senior Researcher at Bio and Emerging Technology Institute in Ethiopia. Her research focuses on modern biotechnology tools to improve crop productivity and supports crop improvement in Africa.
Yemi's work during her Short Research Stay
Programmed cell death (PCD) plays a critical role in plants' development and defense mechanisms. It is a genetically regulated process that involves the organized destruction of cells. PCD is a vital defense response when plants encounter various biotic and abiotic stresses.
Dr. Abebaw worked under the VIB-UGent Center for Plant Systems Biology with Dr. Moritz Nowack. Yemisrach interest is to study PCD to support the development of stress-tolerant breeding programs for Ethiopian crops, encompassing biotic and abiotic stress factors.
