Dr. Woinshet Defar
Dr. Woinshet Defar holds a PhD in Applied Mathematics from University of the Western Cape, Cape Town, South Africa. She serves as Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics at Jimma University, Ethiopia, as well as Gender Focal Person.
Her research environment lacks access to real-world biological data and collaboration with researchers in the field. It primarily revolves around theoretical aspects: the application of the mathematical model is limited to toy model problems due to a lack of access and collaboration with researchers working on real biological models.
Woinshet's work during her Short Research Stay
The Open Doors Fellowship Program allowed Woinshet to collaborate with experts in Belgium, enriching her research capabilities. Hosted by the Knowledge-based Systems research unit (KERMIT) at the Faculty of Bioscience Engineering at Gent University, Dr. Defar was exposed to new computational approaches such as Cellular Automata and Agent-based models.
Aware of the underrepresentation of women in numerical analysis research, Woinshet plans to share what she learnt through workshops, mentorship, and collaborative projects to empower the next generation of Ethiopian scientists. Her efforts will not only strengthen sustainable North-South partnerships but also promote gender equality in academia.
