Dr. Harriet Angwech
Dr. Angwech is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Biology, Faculty of Science at Gulu University, Uganda, with an MSc in Zoology (Parasitology) and a PhD in Agricultural Technology and Biotechnology from the University of Molise. Her professional expertise lies in Parasitology and Biotechnology, with a keen interest in antimicrobial resistance and controlling vector-borne and food-borne diseases. Harriet's work spans the epidemiology of trypanosomiasis, gastrointestinal helminths, ticks and tick-borne diseases, and antimicrobial resistance mitigation using prebiotics. She supervises MSc and PhD students and collaborates on research validating the therapeutic efficacy of Artemisinin-based combination therapy and the diagnostic efficacy of Plasmodium falciparum histidine-rich protein-based rapid diagnostic tests in Uganda.
Harriet is committed to advancing her research in disease diagnostics and antimicrobial resistance surveillance, particularly in livestock and human health.
Harriet's work during her Short Research Stay
Dr. Angewch was hosted at the UGent Laboratory of Parasitology during her Short Research Stay. Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Bruno Lewecke, Harriet focused on investigating the prevalence of mutant single-nucleotide polymorphisms in the beta-tubulin gene, which are linked to anthelminthic resistance in livestock species.
Uganda is currently implementing WHO's mass drug administration against soil-transmitted helminths, and Dr. Angewch's research aims to ensure the long-term success of these interventions by assessing drug resistance. This experience provided her with access to specialised expertise and equipment not available at Gulu University, significantly enhancing her research capabilities.
