Dr. Hadiza Lawal Abdullahi, a Biochemist-Toxinologist/Medical Laboratory Scientist, is affiliated with the Departments of Medical Laboratory Science and Veterinary Physiology and Biochemistry at Bayero University, Kano, Nigeria. Her primary goal is to enhance food security through research, which led her to establish a mycotoxin research group as part of the Center for Dryland Agriculture at Bayero University. Currently, she serves as a Postdoctoral Researcher while also holding the positions of head of the Department of Veterinary Physiology and Biochemistry and Associate Professor.

In the context of Northern Nigeria, the underrepresentation of female scientists results in a lack of mentorship opportunities and a challenging work environment for women. Nevertheless, Dr. Hadiza remains deeply passionate about her STEM career and strives to empower as many female scientists as possible. This unwavering commitment drives her to continue pursuing her goals and become the role model she aspires to be.

Hadiza's work during her Short Research Stay

The issue of mycotoxin contamination in food, animal feed, and agricultural products continues to pose a significant challenge worldwide. Dr. Abdullahi wants to improve food security in her country through her research.

During her Short Research Stay, Hadiza was hosted by the Center of Excellence in Mycotoxicology and Public Health (Ghent University) under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Sarah De Saeger. While there, she focused on identifying and profiling Aspergillus flavus metabolomes using High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry (HRMS) technology.
