Dr. Almaz Meseret Gezahegn
After completing her Bachelor’s in Plant Science at Alemaya University (Ethiopia) and her Master’s in Agronomy at Haramaya University (Ethiopia), Dr. Almaz Meseret obtained a Ph.D. in Agronomy from University Putra in Malaysia. Now she is working as a Senior Researcher and National Coordinator of the Agronomy and Crop Physiology Research Program at the Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research.
Almaz's work during her Short Research Stay
Crop yield is greatly influenced by the management of water and nutrients and the complex interactions between these factors. Gaining a complete understanding of the processes involved with field experimentation alone would be expensive and time-consuming. However, crop simulation models such as APSIM and DSSAT can help overcome these challenges. By integrating various factors and considering long-term climate data and soil information, these models can identify improved practices for managing nutrients and water and increasing crop production.
Dr. Meseret carried out her Short Research Stay at the Flanders Research Institute for Agriculture and Fisheries and Food (ILVO) in the Plant Sciences Unit under the guidance of Dr. Tom De Swaef. Here, she had the opportunity to familiarize herself with the APSIM model. This model is not widely utilized in Ethiopia. Therefore, Almaz will use it to develop a decision-support tool for crop management strategies, enhancing agricultural practices in her home country.
